چکیده

When unfamiliar non-speech sounds and visual input cooccur, they often compete for attention, with auditory input overshadowing visual information for infants and young children (Robinson & Sloutsky, in press; Sloutsky & Napolitano, 2003). The current study investigated whether labels and familiar sounds also compete for attention with corresponding visual information in infancy. The results indicate that, unlike unfamiliar, non-speech sounds, labels do not compete for attention with corresponding visual information at 16-months of age: 16-month-olds ably encoded both auditory and visual information. At the same time 8-month-olds only encoded the labels. When infants were familiarized to the same non-speech sounds that overshadowed visual input in Robinson and Sloutsky’s study, 16-month-olds encoded both auditory and visual information, whereas, 8-month-olds continued to encode only the sounds. These findings, in conjunction with the findings of Robinson and Sloutsky (in press) and Sloutsky and Napolitano (2003), point to an important developmental progression in processing of auditory and

Is a picture worth a thousand words? The flexible nature of modality dominance in young children.

When presented simultaneously with equally discriminable, but unfamiliar, visual and auditory stimuli, 4-year-olds exhibited auditory dominance, processing only auditory information (Sloutsky & Napolitano, 2003). The current study examined factors underlying auditory dominance. In 6 experiments, 4-year-olds (N=181) were presented with auditory and visual compounds in which (a) the complexity an...

Multisensory identification of natural objects in a two-way crossmodal priming paradigm.

The question of how vision and audition interact in natural object identification is currently a matter of debate. We developed a large set of auditory and visual stimuli representing natural objects in order to facilitate research in the field of multisensory processing. Normative data was obtained for 270 brief environmental sounds and 320 visual object stimuli. Each stimulus was named, categ...

Familiarity of objects affects susceptibility to the sound-induced flash illusion.

Audition is accepted as more reliable (thus dominant) than vision when temporal discrimination is required by the task. However, it is not known whether the characteristics of the visual stimulus, for example its familiarity to the perceiver, affect auditory dominance. In this study we manipulated familiarity of the visual stimulus in a well-established multisensory phenomenon, i.e., the sound-...

The neural correlates of person familiarity. A functional magnetic resonance imaging study with clinical implications.

Neural activity was measured in 10 healthy volunteers by functional MRI while they viewed familiar and unfamiliar faces and listened to familiar and unfamiliar voices. The familiar faces and voices were those of people personally known to the subjects; they were not people who are more widely famous in the media. Changes in neural activity associated with stimulus modality irrespective of famil...

Examining Cardiac and Behavioral Responses in a Modality Dominance Task

The current study examined cardiac and behavioral responses to changing auditory and visual information while using modified oddball tasks. When instructed to press the same button for auditory and visual oddballs, auditory dominance was found with cross-modal presentation slowing down visual response times and decreasing visual accuracy. When instructed to make separate responses to auditory a...
